Most people know that engine oil is important, but many of them don't know why. What is the purpose of motor oil? What are the different types? How do I check my oil? What happens if I don't change my oil regularly?

Evans Infinity of Dayton has all the answers and more to help you understand just how important motor oil is for the well-being of your vehicle.

Everything You Need To Know About Oil

Engine oil or motor oil helps all of the fast-moving parts of your engine to operate smoothly without overheating or grinding against each other. It is designed to lubricate the components of your engine and cool them down to prevent overheating and premature deterioration.

Motor oil is critical for engine protection and keeping your vehicle in good shape. But as your motor oil does its job, the heat and friction cause the oil to deteriorate. To prevent the deterioration from causing issues with the engine, you will need to get an oil change regularly as a part of your car maintenance.

Getting your oil changed regularly allows your car's motor oil to do its job smoothly, allowing your vehicle to get better performance, fuel efficiency, and more.

What Is An Oil Change?

An oil change is a service that consists of draining all of the old motor oil out of your car, then replacing it with fresh motor oil. There are different kinds of motor oil to do this with, from high-mileage motor oil to synthetic oil and more.

As the motor oil in the engine does its job to cool and lubricate, it picks up metal and dirt particles that it carries through an oil filter. The oil filter's job is to remove these particles before the oil runs through the engine again. As time goes on, the motor oil deteriorates, the vehicle's oil filter fills up with particulates, and the filter can't keep all of the particles out of the engine.

Getting an oil change and installing a new oil filter allows your engine to continually cycle clean oil through the engine, offering the best performance possible.

How Do I Check My Oil?

Most modern vehicles have an Oil Life Monitoring System or OLMS that monitors your vehicle's operating conditions, including engine revolutions, engine temperature, and miles driven. This allows it to give you an accurate estimate of when it is time to get an oil change.

But even in vehicles with these systems, it's a good idea to keep an eye on your oil manually. The good news? It's a very simple process. Just pop the hood of your car and check the dipstick. If you're not sure where to find the dipstick, consult your Owner's Manual.

Pull out the dipstick, wipe it off on a rag or paper towel, then replace it. Pull it out again slowly, then check the oil level, color, and consistency. The oil level should be between the "high" and "low" marks on the dipstick, the color should be black or brown, and you shouldn't be able to see visible dirt or metal particulates. If these things are not true, it is time for an oil change.

How Often Do I Need To Change My Oil?

For vehicles with an OLMS, simply get your oil changes done when the light comes on. For vehicles without an OLMS, check your Owner's Manual to see the Service and Maintenance Schedule and your car manufacturer's recommendations.

Depending on the type of motor oil you get with your oil change, you might need to get an oil change as soon as every 3,000 miles or three months or as long as 7,000 miles or six months. It all depends on the type of oil you choose. A full synthetic oil change can last much longer than a conventional oil change.

What Happens If I Don't Change My Oil?

Your motor oil has a very important job and, over time, will collect metal shavings and dirt. If this motor oil continues to cycle through your engine, it can cause issues with your engine, including decreased performance, accelerated engine deterioration, corrosion, sludge accumulation, overheating, and even total engine failure.

What Are The Different Types Of Car Oil?

For some Ohio drivers, selecting the right oil to keep your car running smoothly is easy - in fact, your vehicle might only take one kind of motor oil. But there are several different kinds of motor oils, and drivers whose vehicles take more than one kind of motor oil need to choose which type best suits their vehicle and their needs.

Generally, there are three different kinds of motor oil: full synthetic oil, semi-synthetic oil or synthetic blend oil, and conventional oil.

  • Synthetic

A full synthetic oil change service generally costs the most, especially in vehicles that take up to five quarts of motor oil. This is because full synthetic oil is designed to be a high-mileage oil that offers the most durable wear protection. The upside to the cost, however, is that you won't have to get your oil changed as frequently since it is a high-mileage oil.

  • Semi-Synthetic

Semi-synthetic oil or synthetic blend oil combines conventional oil and synthetic oil for a less expensive option that offers more benefits than conventional oil.

  • Conventional

Conventional motor oil is what has been in use for decades and is generally recommended for older vehicles with low mileage. Conventional oil is generally the least expensive and comes in a variety of quality levels.
