Tire Replacement

Just like a new pair of tennis shoes, a new set of tires will provide plenty of traction to grip the road as you drive. But much like an old, worn pair of running shoes, the treads of your tires also wear down over time until they provide reduced traction on the road. At that point, it is time to get a new set.

Why Tire Replacement is Important

Rubber tire treads are designed to grip the road while you drive, providing necessary traction to ensure that you don't slide around on the toad, especially in inclement weather such as rain, snow, or ice. As you use your tires, the friction on the road causes the treads to wear down, eventually providing reduced traction and putting you more at risk in inclement weather.

When You Should Get a Tire Replacement

Tires should be replaced at the ten-year mark at the latest, but not all tires last that long. Factors such as road conditions and mileage will also influence when you’ll need new tires.

You can also visually inspect your tires to see if it is time for a new set. Tires often have built-in tread-wear indicators called “wear bars” that you can check. You can also try the penny trick, which consists of putting a penny (head down) in between your tire treads in the most worn area. If part of Lincoln’s head is covered by the tread, you’re in the clear. If his head is completely exposed, it is time for new tires.

The Tire Replacement Process

Step 1:    A service technician will start by lifting your vehicle and removing all tires. It is recommended that all four tires be replaced at the same time.

Step 2:    Once the old tires are removed, new ones are inspected and installed.

Step 3:    Your vehicle is ready for the road!

Cost of Tire Replacements

Tires come in a variety of price ranges. They can be priced as low as $50 each for lower-end tires and can get up to $1,000 per tire or more for top-of-the-line tires. The average price in the US, however, is around $600 for a full set.

Questions to Ask Your Service Technician

  • When should I get a tire rotation and alignment to maintain my new tires?
  • What sort of warranty coverage, if any, comes with my new tires?

Signs of a Quality Tire Replacement

  • Treads should be thick and uniform.
  • Tires should provide confident traction on the road.
  • No bulges or wear should be visible on the new tires.

Caring for Your Vehicle After a Tire Replacement

  • Like a new pair of shoes, your tires will need to be “broken in.” This can take a couple hundred miles to provide the best traction.
  • It is important to balance, rotate, and align your new tires regularly to avoid uneven wear on your new tires.
